Assesment methods :
During the semester there will be 2 written tests in 15 points, semester project and its presentation in 10 points and a final written exam in 60 points. To obtain A mark will be needed to obtain at least 93 points, for the evaluation of B mark at least 86 points, C mark at least 79 points, for the evaluation of D mark at least 72 points and for the evaluation of E mark at least 64 points.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student will understand the basic methods and technologies of plant tissue cultures, techniques of recombinant DNA, gene transfer into the plants, transgenics in crop improvement, genomics, bioinformatics and molecular techniques in plants. After the course a student is able to apply molecular methods and techniques in the field of plant biotechnology.

Course contents:
Plant tissue cultures - types of cultures, micropropagation, cell suspension cultures and secondary metabolite, in vitro production of haploids,somaclonal variability. Transfer of genes to plants - temporary and stable expression of transgenes, methods of transfer of genes, silencing of genes. Improving of agronomic traits using genetic modifications - resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, resistance to herbicides, improving quality of plants, transgenic plants as bioreactors. Genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics. Molecular markers and marker assisted selection in plants. Legislation concerning GMOs in the Slovak Republic.
