Assesment methods :
The term grade will consist of continuous assessment – two written exams (15 and 20 points), laboratory protocol (5 points) and end-of-term examination will comprise of written exam (60 points).
Grading scale: letter grade A requires minimum 93 points, letter grade B requires minimum 86 points, letter grade C requires minimum 79 points, letter grade D requires minimum 72 points, letter grade E requires minimum 64 points,
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student gets the knowledge and undestand principles of non-cell biological systems (viruses, satellites, viroids, prions), bacteria, archea and eukarya (protista, fungi, animals and human being) heredity on the level of molecules, cells, organisms and populations. The student will comprehend the relationships between information molecules (DNA, RNA) and proteins when genetic information is transcripted and translated. The student will be able to analyse chromosomes amount and morphology and to interpret the traits heredity by the combinations, linkage of genes and linkage on sex chromosomes using genetic and genealogic shcemes.
Course contents:
The aim and history of genetics. Information molecules and heridity (structure and function of DNA, RNA, gene and control of activity of gene). Cell and heridity (genetic significance of mitosis and meiosis, chromosomes, gamatogenesis and fertilization). Inheritance of organism (nuclear, non-nuclear inheritance, mendelian inheritance, gene mutation, plant genetic engineering). Population genetics and evolution. Genetics of quntitative traits. Genetics of non-cellular biological systems. Genetics of Bacteria. Genetics of Archaea. Genetics of Eukarya. Principles of plant genetic engineering, genetic technologies, genomics and bioinformatics.
