Assesment methods :
The term grade will consist of continuous assessment – one written exam (25 points), seminar work (10 points), laboratory protocol (5 points) and end-of-term examination will comprise written parts (60 points).
Grading scale: letter grade A requires minimum 93 points, letter grade B requires minimum 86 points, letter grade C requires minimum 79 points, letter grade D requires minimum 72 points, letter grade E requires minimum 64 points.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
After completion of the subject the student understands the general principle of totipotency, somaclonal variability and the use of isolated plant cells in culture in vitro. The student understands the possibility of deliberate influence of plant growth through external growth regulators. The student gains practical skills of preparing a culture media and application of different types of techniques for culturing of explants in vitro. Graduates are able to apply knowledge, not only in laboratory practice, as well as in research.
Course contents:
Characterization of different types of tissue cultures. Embryocultures, meristem culture, cloning in vitro, callus, cell and protoplast culture. Growth regulators and their significance for explant culture. Organogenesis, embryogenesis and micropropagation in vitro. The meaning and use of explant cultures to agricultural biotechnology.
