During the semester, students will elaborate 5 separate protocols that will meet all the requirements of a short scientific article, ie. article title, author's name, abstract, introduction cited from sources of scientific literature, material and methods, results and discussion, conclusions and references. Together they can earn 30 points in the form of teamwork. Students can earn 10 points for their individual semestral work on a selected biotechnological topic in the field of microbiology, which they will elaborate in detail in the form of a scientific contribution in the Slovak language. The exam will consist of written (40 points) and oral (20 points) forms. Together, the student can earn 100 points. To obtain an A (1) rating, a minimum of 93 points is required, for a B score from 86 to 92, a C score from 79 to 85, a D score from 72 to 78 and an E score from 64 to 71. For less than 64 points, the student receives FX. Credits will be awarded to a student who fulfills the conditions for credit for the subject.
To grant the credit it is necessary to:
1. Submission of all five protocols and the scientific paper,
2. To get at least 15 points out of 40 for credit,
3. Absence in a maximum of 4 teaching units.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student will understand the basic principles in microbial biotechnology, i. understand the biotechnological processes in which we use living microorganisms. Can discuss the role of microbiology in industrial fermentation processes and describe the use of microorganisms in biotechnology. It can also describe the role of microorganisms in many areas of applied microbiology, including biological control and food production using microbial technologies. They will understand biochemical processes and metabolism in micro-organisms, which are the basis of biotechnological production.
Course contents:
Introduction to biotechnology of microorganisms, history of microbial biotechnology, utilization of microorganisms in biotechnology (classical and modern), basic characteristics of microorganism metabolism (aerobic and anaerobic processes), microbial production of primary and secondary metabolites and their use, microbial biomass or food, feed microbial production of bio-energies, microorganisms in biological protection, microbial production of biochemical substances and traditional microbial biotechnologies in food production.
