Title of the thesis:Verification of Cultivation and Energy Conversion of Microalgae
Summary:Construction of new biogas plant stations in Europe is a steadily growing trend, that is the reason why there is a need to find a proper alternative source of energy to replace maize silage (represents 85% of used input raw materials in Slovakia). The dissertation thesis reviews the possible potential of microalgae, which in future can be used as an alternative raw material for biogas production. When comparing microalgae with traditional crops, we can point out their high potential (oil content). During the production of biogas from traditional input materials, there is still a great potential of resulting organic waste – CO2, fermentation water (digestate), but also by the usage of biogas in cogeneration units – heat, which can be used in a closed cycle in the intensive year-round cultivation of microalgae. Such closed system would contribute in reduction of CO2 emissions and provision of proper raw material in the form of high quality biomass from microalgae. Lots of alternative technologies of algae cultivation are currently developed all over the world. There is a necessity to search for a sensible way to produce algal biomass for bioenergy purposes, while maintaining all requirements involved in environmental and economic issues. The research results (6 experiments performed with anaerobic fermentation of microalgae) presented in the dissertation thesis show that microalgae are proper alternative material for biogas production with the method of anaerobic fermentation.
