Title of the thesis:The economic impacts of biofuel production
Summary:The Bachelor thesis investigates the current and past situation in the field of biofeuel production. The aim of this work is to provide some basic information about biofuels,to analyze the relationships among fuel (oil, gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, ethanol) prices and between fuel and food prices (sugar, wheat, corn), and last but not least to analyze the annual price change of the commodities. Biofuel production is is starting to play more important part nowadays than has ever before. This special type of fuel has several advantages against regular fossil fuels. They are more friendly to the environment, help in decreasing the dependency on oil importing, strengthen the position of rural areas, are almost perfect substitutes to fossil fuels, and have very positive energy content ratio. Unfortunately a negative aspect of biofuel production is that the conversion of savannas, peatlands and other green zones is necessary. The relationships between the prices of commodities indicate a lot of things, and for that reason does this thesis analyze them. The development of food and fuel prices is monitored on a monthly basis from January, 2006 to March 2013. The analyses reveal that there are in fact relationships among the previously mentioned commodity prices, some are very strong some are less. The annual price changes of the commodities are monitored from the year 1993 until 2011, but in the case of ethanol and biodiesel the period is shorter, 2006-2012. The graphical analyses shows that the prices tend to react to each other's changes. The aim is to test the hypotheses on the relationships between commodity prices and to analyze the price changes of commodities.
Key words:biofuel, biofuel production, fossil fuel, impacts of biofuel production, food and fuel price relationships
