Title of the thesis:
Thermophysical Properties and Thermal Behaviour of Biological Materials
Habilitation thesis deals with thermophysical properties and thermal behaviour of biological materials. This thesis is presented as the set of published scientific works with commentary. Set of published works includes wide topic of investigation of thermophysical properties and temperature variation of the biological materials properties and study of processes running in the material due to temperature changes -- study of thermal behaviour of materials. Individual articles are focused on partial themes: - heat transfer and thermophysical properties, thermal conductivity measurement by hot-wire method, uncertainty of measurement and thermophysical properties of biological materials, - effect of temperature on biological material properties investigation by methods of thermal analysis, measurement of specific heat by differential scanning calorimetry, thermal stability investigation by method of thermogravimetric analysis, - energy value (specific heat of combustion) of biological materials (biofuels) measurement. Short characterization of biological material and motivation of thermal properties and thermal behaviour investigation is given in the introduction. Considering complex chemical composition, structure and complex behaviour of biological material, moisture content and temperature are the most important physical factors that influence physical and physiological processes running in the biological materials. Important factor is also the material's history. Experimental work is focused on the measurement of thermophysical properties and on the study of factors affecting properties and processes running in the biological material. Description of the measurement methods, experimental equipment is presented in the part of Commentary of the set of published scientific works. To measure thermophysical properties and to study of thermal behaviour of biological material the following experimental methods and apparatuses were used: - hot-wire method and experimental apparatus for the thermal conductivity, the thermal diffusivity and the specific heat (or volume heat capacity) measurement, - differential scanning calorimetry and DSC calorimeter for measurement of the specific heat and for study of thermal processes, - thermogravimetry and TGA analyser for study of dehydration and thermal degradation, - combustion calorimeter for measurement of specific heat of combustion. Published works of the thesis content original results, which can be summarized as follows: - measurement of thermophysical properties -- the thermal conductivity, the thermal diffusivity, the specific heat of the different biological plant materials (grain or seed sets, biofuels), measurement of thermophysical properties as a function of the temperature, - measurement of specific heat as a function of temperature, temperature degradation -- DSC, TGA curves for different biological materials, - measurement of specific heat of combustion for different kind of biofuels. Physical interpretation and comparison with published data and contribution of the present work for the agricultural science and practice with recommendations for next research is summarized in details in the parts of Assessment of published results and Conclusions.
