Title of the thesis:
Social Capital and the LEADER Approach in Selendi LAG (Turkey)
The concept of “social capital” has gained great interest in several fields of science. The overall access to networks of social ties among individuals and collective actors can create a path to development. The utilization of social capital can lead to the implementation of particularly effective local rural development policies. The objective of the thesis is to evaluate the impact of social capital on rural development under the frame of rural development program LEADER in Turkey. The reason why research was established particularly aimed at LEADER is that LEADER program has facility to solve issues of development via new forms of cooperation and partnerships and linking activities that have impact on national, regional and local administrations and their decision-making policies. The core of the LEADER program is Local Action Group (LAG), therefore the case study presented in the following thesis analyzes the dimensions of social capital in one of the LAGs of Turkey – Selendi LAG. As an establishment of LEADER is a new approach for Turkish rural and local development strategies, it was remarkable for us to compose a research regarding this topic. Data was gained through questionnaires among actors from different sectors in Selendi and was evaluated via network analysis.
Key words:
social capital, network analysis, LEADER, Local Action Group (LAG)
