Title of the thesis:Bio-economy as European perspective
Summary:Abstract A bio-economy can be defined as an economy where the basic main attributes for materials, chemicals and energy are derived from renewable biological resources. This thesis provides an overview of the bio-economy in Europe, examining it from a policy framework, concept perspective, theoretical background, how the bio-economy works and perspectives. The research finds that the definitions of the bio-economy are evolving, but display similarities such as the emphasis on economic output and a broad, cross-sector focus. Mostly there is a positive feedback on the development of bio-economy and bio-based economy in Europe in general. Furthermore, the bio-economy concept has been criticized for presenting a technical fix and pre-empting alternative visions. To advance a competitive and sustainable bio-economy, this thesis calls for attention on two important themes: participation of countries and governments that would engage the general public and key workers in an open and informed dialogue as well as a commitment by the governments and industries to innovate the drives concerted efforts on sustainable development of the bio-economy in Europe.
Key words:bio-energy, Europe, bio-economy
